Better late than never. Warner Bros. has put up a web page announcing a trade-in program that will allow HD DVD owners to get a bit of a break on upgrading the HD DVD titles in their libraries to the Blu Ray versions of the same title.
HD DVD owners looking to move to Blu Ray can mark the titles they want to convert on the site, mail in the HD DVD cover inserts, and for $4.95 plus shipping Warner will send them Blu Ray versions of those titles. Sixteen months after Warner ended the format war, this program may be a little late in coming. However, those still in possession of their HD DVD collection with an interest in going Blu may find this program an attractive incentive.
Ah, the halcyon days of the format war. Chalk me up on the losing side of that one. A year into Blu Ray ownership, I have no big gripes against the format. It's caught up to where HD DVD was during the format war, and extra storage capacity certainly isn't a detriment. My HD DVD collection is long gone, but if you're still hanging on to yours the Warner offer may be of interest. |

Denon has released the first information for their upcoming Blu Ray universal player, the Denon DVD-A1UDC1.
The Denon DVD-A1UDC1 will be Denon's first Blu Ray Profile 2.0 player, and features SACD and DVD-Audio playback in addition to Blu Ray, DVD and CD capabilities. A Silicon Optix Realta chip handles all scaling duties, so video performance should be stellar. Denon is touting the Denon Link 4th Edition interface that allows the Denon DVD-A1UDC1 to share the same clock as a Denon AVR-5308CI for digital signals. This apparently eliminates almost all possibility of jitter when playing back digital sources. The DVD-A1UDC1 sports 7.1 analog outs and balanced outputs for two channel, for those who prefer analog to HDMI for audio.
Word is still out on whether the unit will be Divx endowed, which would truly make this unit a one box solution for all your disc playback needs. The Denon DVD-A1UDC1 is slated to ship in February 2009 for a cool 3800 clams. |

While AV Enthusiast announced the death of HD DVD on January 4, 2008 the rest of the internet has just caught on and is reporting the demise of the HD optical format.
Early this morning Toshiba officially declared they were cutting their losses and discontinuing their HD DVD business. Toshiba president and CEO Atsutoshi Nishida offered “We carefully assessed the long-term impact of
continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded
that a swift decision will best help the market develop. While we
are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the
consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content
remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our
talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital
convergence a reality.”
While a lot of us weren't very happy about Warner Bros. abandoning HD DVD, after that we all knew this was coming sooner or later. It's official, HD DVD is now a footnote.

In what is either the beginning of the fire sale or the start of Toshiba's counteroffensive, Toshiba has slashed prices on their HD DVD player hardware.
Effective immediately the entry level Toshiba HD-A3 is $149.99, the Toshiba HD-A30 $199.99, and the flagship HD-A35 $299.99. The news was released this morning in a fairly lengthy press release from Toshiba that tried to put a happy face on what has certainly been a very bad two weeks for Toshiba and HD DVD by citing strong holiday season sales and good adoption rates of HD DVD hardware in 2007.
One has to wonder how much longer we'll be reporting HD DVD news after the Warner defection and with rumors regarding Universal and Paramount swirling around the net, but Toshiba is going to keep marching on. For now. |
